Research Data Management (RDM)

Context

The three Canadian federal granting agencies, namely, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), view Research Data Management (RDM) as a necessary part of research excellence.

Using public funds, the agencies support research, research training, knowledge transfer and innovation. In turn, they expect that the research they fund will be replicable and conducted according to the highest professional, disciplinary and ethical standards. In addition, the agencies believe that research data should be responsibly and securely managed, and available for reuse by others, whenever ethical, cultural, legal and commercial obligations allow.

According to the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, as of March 1, 2023, all postsecondary institutions eligible to administer Tri-Agency funds must have an institutional RDM strategy.

Vanier's RDM Strategy

Vanier's original RDM strategy was approved by Academic Council and the Board of Governors during the Winter 2023 semester.

Reviews and Revisions

Vanier’s RDM strategy is reviewed every two years. The next revision is scheduled for March 1, 2025 (delayed).

Reviews are led by the RDM Strategy Implementation Committee, which is chaired by the Dean, Academic Development and Research and co-chaired by the Research Officer. In consultation with all committee members and other relevant stakeholders, the committee proposes revisions to account for evolving RDM services, infrastructure and practices.

Responsibility

The implementation of Vanier’s RDM strategy is overseen by the Dean, Academic Development and Research.
