Any researcher (internal or external) who wishes to conduct a research project (funded or unfunded) at Vanier must first seek approval for their project from the Research Office. Upon receiving such a request by email, the Research Officer will ensure that an institutional suitability and feasibility assessment is completed, and will communicate the results of that assessment to the researcher.
If the research project in question involves human participants, approval from the Vanier REB is also required. To initiate the process, Principal Investigators (PIs) must complete an Application to Conduct Research with Human Participants at Vanier and return it to the Research Officer along with all mandatory supporting documents at least 10 working days prior to the REB meeting during which they would like their project to be reviewed, and well in advance of the date on which they plan to begin their data collection. Note that one of the supporting documents that must be included with the application consists of an approved Privacy Impact Assessment Form that aims to ensure Law 25 compliance. It is the PI’s responsibility to acquire this document and include it with their application to the Research Officer. The Panel on Research Ethics highly recommends that all researchers who intend to engage in research involving human participants, as well as REB members and administrators, successfully complete the TCPS 2 Course on Research Ethics (CORE 2022).
The TCPS 2 CORE-2022 is an online tutorial that provides an introduction to the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) for the research community. It focuses on the TCPS 2 ethics guidance that is applicable to all research involving human participants – including their data and/or biological materials – regardless of discipline or methodology.
Although the completion of the TCPS 2 CORE 2 is not currently mandatory at Vanier, we strongly encourage researchers to complete the training prior to conducting any research with human participants that falls under Vanier's jurisdiction or auspices. Primary Investigators (PIs) and collaborators - including student research assistants - may submit their certificate of completion with the Application to Conduct Research at Vanier that corresponds to the project undergoing review.
Individuals or teams conducting research under the jurisdiction or auspices of Vanier College must adhere to all applicable government and institutional policies, frameworks and guidelines—including, but not limited to, those linked below—as well as to any program and/or contractual conditions outlined by the funder.
