The Research Ethics Board (Vanier REB) reviews the ethical acceptability of all research involving humans conducted within our jurisdiction or under our auspices. The Vanier REB is independent in its decision-making with respect to the process of research ethics review, and members use the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2) as a guide for their decision making.
Projects requiring REB review
- Research conducted by Vanier or external researchers, which recruits members of the Vanier community (students, teachers or staff) as participants
- Research on human participants conducted by researchers based at Vanier, whether or not the participants are members of the Vanier community
- Research that uses data that is accessible within the college but not normally available to the public

Projects exempt from Vanier REB review
- In-class research projects conducted by Vanier students under the supervision of their teachers.
These projects are typically exempt from requiring REB review. Teachers whose classes will be conducting research that involves human participants should consult the Guidelines for Teachers Whose Course Activities Involve Research with Human Participants. The Vanier REB is available to provide support and guidance for teachers supervising in-class projects, as required.
- Internal institutional evaluations, for example, program evaluations:
These processes are still required to adhere to the highest ethical standards as expected of other forms of research. The Pedagogical Support and Innovation Office (PSI) and Vanier REB are available to provide support, as needed.
