Research Office

The Research Office is an academic sector service under the authority of the Dean, Academic Development and Research, who also oversees the Pedagogical Support and Innovation Office and Learning Commons.

About

Our primary mission is to assist Vanier researchers and research teams to identify funding sources for their projects. We also alleviate and help our researchers navigate the complex administrative processes and regulatory compliance requirements associated with applying for and managing a grant. This allows them to focus on producing and disseminating quality and impactful research. In addition, we offer recommendations to our executive management regarding matters that relate to our research ecosystem, including strategic initiatives, investments and policies.

The Research Officer

The service operates under the professional leadership of the Research Officer (RO), who acts as an advisor to Vanier researchers and management, and a liaison between Vanier and funding agencies, ministries and other relevant organizations. The RO provides guidance regarding individual and institutional grants, as well as recommendations regarding the strategic allocation of grant funds pertaining to the indirect costs of research—from federal and provincial sources. This includes ensuring that grant applications and reports are eligible and compliant with internal and external policies, regulations and guidelines.

The RO is also the central coordinator and facilitator of Research Office administrative activities requiring the collaboration of multiple institutional services (such as Finance, Registrar and IT), faculties, offices and the Vanier REB throughout the grant lifecycle. In addition, the RO focuses on the continuous improvement of processes and procedures related to such collaborative workflows.

The Research Technician

The Research Technician (RT) offers support towards Research Office activities, including assisting with the processing of documents and the dissemination of information for researchers and office staff.

The RT concurrently acts as an administrative resource for the Vanier REB, issuing ethics certificates on behalf of the REB Chair. The RT also maintains a database of those ethics certificates and TCPS2 CORE trainings for the Research Office.

The Dean, Academic Development and Research

The Dean, Academic Development and Research (Dean, ADR) provides institutional oversight for research at Vanier, including oversight pertaining to Research Data Management (RDM).

In collaboration with the Academic Dean, Research Officer and other internal and external stakeholders, the Dean, ADR also helps foster a culture of inquiry and innovation, sets priorities aligned with the College’s academic mission, guides policy revisions, and advocates for resources and partnerships that strengthen Vanier’s research ecosystem.

Moreover, the Dean, ADR contributes to Research Office daily operations by virtue of being part of our institution’s grant application approval chain, and by authorizing expenditures related to the direct and indirect costs of research before they are initiated.
