Vanier College is proud to announce that it is now a member of AASHE, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education!

Vanier College recognizes the current Climate Emergency and the need to promote sustainability and climate action education. Hence, the Vanier College Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution pledging the College’s commitment to climate action by signing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Accord in 2019, which binds the College to:

  1. Mobilizing more resources for action-oriented climate change research and skills creation;

  2. Committing to going carbon neutral by 2030 or 2050 at the very latest;

  3. Increasing the delivery of environmental and sustainability education across curriculum, campus and community outreach programs.

With this in mind, the College, which has been a Cégep Vert Niveau Excellence for the past 8 years, has now registered as a STARS participant with the support of the Board of Directors.

A program of AASHE, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System, better known as STARS, is a self-assessment tool used by institutions of higher education to measure their sustainability progress.

“STARS will help Vanier to set and meet sustainability goals while fostering collaboration and information-sharing across its campus,” says Arianne Duchesne, Vanier’s Health, Safety and Sustainability Manager. “STARS will also enable the College to benchmark with peers and assess where the gaps are in order to become a more sustainable institution. Moreover, this tool will help create the baseline for Vanier’s current carbon footprint.”

Participating in STARS requires a substantial amount of data collection in four main categories, Academics, Engagement, Operations, and Planning & Administration. Arianne Duchesne will be the STARS Liaison for Vanier College and will be spearheading data collection efforts on campus.
