Vanier College Introduces a Student-Run First-Aid Team

Mr. John McMahon, Director General of Vanier College, is pleased to announce the introduction of the Vanier First Aid Team. This student run and administered initiative will provide first-aid assistance to students and staff across campus.

"This is truly an impressive project and I am proud to see how engaged our students are in terms of wanting to put in place services designed to offer help and support to their peers while complementing existing services that are already in place at the College," said Vanier’s Director General John McMahon.

The Vanier Student First Aid Team was the initiative of Vanier Health Sciences student Jeremy Levett. The Vanier College Students Association contributed $10,000 to the project, which was used to make renovations and purchase equipment.

"Vanier is a big campus with a lot of students. I thought that the idea of introducing the First Aid Team would be a win-win for everyone. It not only provides support to the school nurse who is extremely busy, but also offers students and staff an additional resource whereby they can get help for all kinds of different emergency situations and issues. It’s a great way for students to give something back to the community," said Jeremy Levett, who would like to pursue a career in medicine after graduating from Vanier.

Having received over 100 applications, the Vanier First Aid Team is made up of 40 students who all underwent special comprehensive First-Aid training by Saint John’s Ambulance, the Canadian Red Cross, Sauvetage Quebec or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. During a given semester two members of the team will be present from 9 am to 5 pm in their drop-in consultation room, which is located in D-105. The team will also be working in close collaboration with Vanier’s Security Department, which will be called in to offer assistance for all emergency First-Aid situations.

The First-Aid team will also work in collaboration with the College nurse to promote public awareness campaigns on different medical issues, including Sexually Transmitted Disease prevention, Responsible Drinking and Nutrition. As well, starting in the Winter 2018 semester, members of the First Aid Team hope to be present at different public events taking place at Vanier College, including sporting events, in order to provide tailored First-Aid assistance whenever it is needed.
