Vanier College Choir concert will feature a rarely heard Magnificat

The end of the first semester at Vanier College will be marked by Heavenly Places a choral concert performed by the Vanier College Choir under the direction of Philippe Bourque. The concert on December 7, 2012 will underscore the rich tradition of Christian sacred choral works inspired by the birth of Christ.

A rarely heard Magnificat
The concert will open with the rarely performed Magnificat by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788). This musically rich and impressive choral work is both Baroque and pre-classical galant in style. Full of electrifying energy but also highly refined, the work alternates between the choir and the soloists and finally concludes with a grand fugue worthy of the great composers such as his father, Johann Sebastian Bach.

Guest artists
The choir will be accompanied by an orchestra composed of Vanier alumni and friends and organist, Jacques Giroux. The solo artists are Tamara Vickerd, soprano (Vanier professor), Erica Martin, mezzo-soprano (Vanier graduate), Pasquale d’Allessio, tenor and François Lefebvre, bass.

And for the second half of the program
The second part of the program for the evening will put the acoustics of the concert venue to the test by alternating between works performed with the organ or a cappella with Wie lieblich sind deine wohnungen an excerpt from the Requiem of J. Brahms Op.45 (1833-1897), and The Cherubic Hymn – an excerpt from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Op.41, by P. I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). That will be followed by a jewel of choral music, O Mangum Mysterium, by Morten Lauridesen (1943- ) and of course for this season of rejoicing, Star Carol, by John Rutter (1945- ). The concert will end with nothing less than the gospel Hallelujah Jesus is born, (Arr. Bradley Knight) accompanied by pianist and Vanier professor, Chad Linsley.
