Vanier College is proud to announce that two student athletes have received bursaries from the Foundation for Athletic Excellence (FAEQ) in partnership with Hydro Quebec. Soccer player Julianne Vallerand was awarded a $4,000 bursary, and long jump and hurdles athlete Adriana Phan received $2,000. Both athletes received their bursaries from the academic excellence category. This year, 29 student-athletes received bursaries as part of the 21st edition of the Hydro-Québec Bursary Program, presented recently at the Lion d’Or.
There were three bursary types awarded: nineteen Academic Excellence bursaries to reward outstanding scholastic achievement, nine Academic and Athletic Support bursaries to promote the successful balance of athletic and academic pursuits, and one Perseverance bursary to commend exemplary attitude in the face of difficult circumstances.
Julianne Vallerand, who is student in Pure and Applied Science, helped the Canadian team qualify for the Under-17 World Cup; had a third place finish in the CONCACAF Under-17 Soccer Championship; won Gold medals at the Canada Games in 2017; and maintained an academic average of 84% in Secondary 5, at École Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry. Julianne, who intends to be a part of Canada’s starting line-up at the Under 17 World Cup in November, is a distinguished soccer player. Confident, rigorous and detail oriented, she is excels in outsmarting her opponents while remaining calm under pressure. Her athletic aim is to become an Olympian and her career goal is to pursue the field of engineering.
Adriana Phan, who also studies Science at Vanier, won gold in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.42 sec at the Quebec Championships; won gold in the long jump with 5.41m at the Quebec Championships; placed 9th in hurdles at the Junior Canadian Championships; and maintained an academic average of 90 % in Secondary 5 at Collège Jean de la Mennais. Adriana quickly learns new technical points that are linked to her sport. She wants to develop a better attitude towards performance challenges in order to learn from them. One of her main priorities in the coming months is to take good care of her back and successfully manage her transition to the juniors. Her long-term goals for the coming years are to be part of the Canadian teams and the Olympics. Adriana wants to study medicine and is interested in radiology, surgery, and chiropractic.
Congratulations to these outstanding athletes and students.
