Vanier College at the 2016 Montreal International Jazz Festival

Vanier College Music will be in the spotlight and hit centre stage at the Montreal International Jazz Festival this summer. First, Vanier Music graduate, Sarah Rossy and SHYRE, a five-piece chamber-pop creative collaboration, will perform on July 3-4-5, at 7 p.m., at the Savoy du Metropolis. Then, the Vanier Big Band will perform at the Rio Tinto Stage at 3pm on July 7th under the direction of conductor Jocelyn Couture. The Big Band won Gold in May at the Jazz Fest des Jeunes du Québec and has performed at the Jazz Festival several times in the past.

Often compared to fellow Montreal-grown musicians such as Patrick Watson and Arcade Fire, SHYRE features ethereal sounds of vocal powerhouse Sarah Rossy, songwriter and bandleader. SHYRE’s unique sonic character, combining orchestral textures with pop-folk undertones, emerges from their diverse make-up: composed of a violinist, violist, singer/pianist, bassist, and a drummer–the first female drummer at McGill’s Schulich school of music, no less. It is no surprise that audiences all over Quebec and beyond have been so receptive of this all-Canadian ensemble, formed by musicians from Vancouver BC to Moncton NB and in between.
