When she heard about a contest to design a logo for Vanier's 50th anniversary, Micropublishing and Hypermedia student, Kana Yasufuku, was immediately curious and wanted to try it. "I took a lot of time to think about the concept, then got an idea and tried many times until I got what I wanted. I learned a lot doing this project because I watched tutorials online to learn how to design a logo." She was honoured and thrilled to win the contest and the $500 prize that went with it. Winning means her design is on documents and websites related to the 50th Anniversary.

For Kana, it's quite an accomplishment. Three years ago, she emigrated from Japan to live with her Canadian husband first in Trois-Rivières then three months later in Montreal. They had met when she was an exchange student at UQAM where she had come to learn French and English while she was working on her Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Kyoto. Her priority when she moved to Canada was to study more French because she already had some basic knowledge of English. Next, she wanted to be able to work so she decided to go back to school to obtain Quebec qualifications.

Interested in doing something in computers that would offer her variety, creativity and the opportunity to work from home, she chose to study Micropublishing and Hypermedia at Vanier. Since her husband works in the area of computers, the Micropublishing and Hypermedia program that combines graphic design and web development allows her to share something with him.

Studying at Vanier was a fascinating experience for Kana. She enjoyed the student life that is very different from that in Japan and she is happy with her program. In fact, she now hopes to find work as a designer in a local company.

"When I first arrived in Canada I was afraid. I could not speak or understand the language so everything was difficult. Now I understand enough to realize that I can live here!" Next she wants to improve her French but thanks to Vanier Kana has made new friends and even though it is still difficult for her to explain what she is thinking, her language skills are improving.
