Six CEGEP students shared prizes worth $3,000 awarded at the third Intercollegiate World of Images photo competition. The prizes were handed out on May 15 at the Henry Lehmann Gallery at Vanier College, at the opening of the exhibit of the 29 finalists.
Organized by the CCDMD (Collegial Centre for Educational Materials Development), the competition encourages budding photographers and promotes the production and sharing of high-quality artistic and documentary works. It is wholly reserved for students in Québec’s college network.
The 2013–2014 edition of the competition closed April 5. A total of 921 photos were submitted by 243 students from 55 educational institutions.
Marion Ecolivet, a graphic design student at Cégep Marie-Victorin, won the $1,000 first prize for her photo Avant la fête. Dawson College photography student Marie-Jade Dubé-Côté won second prize, worth $750, for Marie-Ange. And, finally, Collège Montmorency fine arts student Raphaëlle Plamondon won the $500 third prize for Le transsexuel
The jury also drew attention to the quality of several other photos among the 29 finalists. Five students received special mention: Laurie Barriault, a social sciences student at Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, for Authenticité; Simon Bernier-Bilodeau and Alexa Enlow, photography students at Cégep du Vieux Montréal, for Naturalisme de la volonté and In the Mood for Love; Nicolas Dubois Desparts, a horticultural production and environmental technology student at the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire in La Pocatière, for 3; and Stéphanie Pineau, a Collège Marsan photography student, for Émerge.
The $250 People’s Choice award went to Matisse Harvey, a political science student at the Collège Stanislas, for Quiétude, the photo that won the most votes from web users.
Finally, two participation prizes worth $250 each were drawn at random and given to two students who submitted photos to the competition between August 26, 2013, and April 4, 2014: Andréanne Gascon, an arts and literature student from Cégep de l’Outaouais, and Estelle Le Mené, a nursing care student from Cégep de Lévis-Lauzon.
For this third edition of the competition, seven people served on the jury: the honorary chair, photographer Jocelyn Michel; three CEGEP representatives – Geneviève Blais, art history teacher and ICT advisor at Collège Gérald-Godin; Véronique Rodriguez, art history teacher at Collège Ahuntsic; and Christoph Heldt, design and photograph teacher at Vanier College; a member of the competition organizing committee – CCDMD project manager Denis Chabot; and a CCDMD employee, project manager Dominique Fortier. Guillaume Levasseur, one of the winners of the 2012–2013 competition and a graduating photography student the Cégep du Vieux Montréal, was the jury’s seventh member.
All the members of the jury and the organizing committee extend their congratulations to the winners and thank them, as well as all the other participants, for contributing to the World of Images website.
The photos of the finalists and winners will remain on display at the Henry Lehmann Gallery at Vanier for the entire summer and until September 8. This exhibit has been made possible through the much-appreciated collaboration of Henri Venne, Dan Stefik, Christoph Heldt and Keith Orkusz, teachers at Vanier Department of Communications: Art, Media, Theatre, and the students Mélanie Salomon (Gallery Director), Simona Vani (Assistant Gallery Director) and Tanya Leahy (Gallery Technician).
