Inauguration of Vanier College’s New Library/Learning Commons

Mr. John McMahon, Director General of Vanier College, is pleased to announce the official inauguration of its Library/Learning Commons. Several dignitaries attended an official ceremony today to mark the opening of the $4.4 million project including Saint Laurent Mayor Alan DeSousa and Saint-Laurent Member of Parliament Emmanuella Lambropoulos.

"This was the biggest construction project at Vanier since we opened the N building back in 1987. I would like to thank the entire Vanier community for their patience while these major renovations were being carried out. I would like to especially thank our students for putting up with the inconveniences that were caused by the construction work. These new facilities will now benefit our community for years to come and will further enhance our already beautiful campus," said John McMahon.

The construction involved complete renovations of the library’s 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. The new facility is based on the concept of a Learning Commons and features other services such as a Tutoring & Academic Success Centre – TASC and the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics – STEM Centre. Learning Commons, also known as information commons, are educational spaces similar to libraries that offer full-service learning, research, and project areas. They include spaces for computer stations, tutoring, collaboration, research, project creation and meetings as well as reading and study areas.

The new Library/Learning Commons features an open concept with lounge chairs, sofas and cushioned tiered seating facilitating collaborative study while other areas for meeting together will be closed or set apart. The renovations also include new office space for library service technicians and professionals, an archive room, new resources, more computers and electrical outlets for students’ personal computers as well as seating for over 600 students for study and work.

"I hope all members of the community feel at home in our new Learning Commons. These new facilities will surely provide our students with all of the resources they need to further enhance their learning experience while studying at our college," said Vanier College’s Academic Dean Annie-Claude Banville.
