It's on to Communications at Concordia
Catherine Woron made the most of her two years at Vanier in the Communications: Art, Media and Theatre program. "I used to be a Hollywood girl, my style of film was romance …" she says, "but watching films in our courses, studying them and critiquing them, I changed." It's clear from hearing Catherine explain video recordings of her own performance art presentations that the projects she created in the Communications program led her to think about serious questions. Her art explored issues such as identity, feminism, the perception of women by men, the effect of those views on women – all serious explorations of serious topics.
And listening to Catherine describe her plans for the future, it's also clear that she takes her role in society very seriously. "I want to go into Public Relations in order to do work for non-profit foundations," she explains. "Together with two other friends, we created a foundation called Fight-4-It which organizes events and activities that support various causes. Last year we raised $4000 to support the Quebec AIDS Foundation. This year we are supporting Women Aware – that fights domestic abuse."
"I think it's my duty to make a difference in my community. I feel I must do something to bring about change and help those who are powerless. So my interest is not just in fundraising but also in raising awareness and getting students involved in issues." "There's no doubt that classes I've taken at Vanier woke me up and shook me up. Working with the foundation is my opportunity to do something and help change things. In my art I like to provoke emotions in people. I want to make them feel and react. Sometimes my art may confuse them, but above all I want to touch them and make them think."
Catherine is currently working on her Major in Communication Studies at Concordia University.
