Explore Career Possibilities at the Vanier/ASHRAE Building Engineering Career Show

Several hundred visitors are expected to show up at Vanier College on Wednesday, October 24th when the Building Systems Engineering Technology (BSET) Program holds the Vanier/ASHRAE Building Engineering Career Show for students interested in studying or working in the field of Building Engineering.

About 20 companies and university representatives will be participating in the career show along with two high schools and Cegep Ste. Hyacinthe. The event starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 2:00 p.m. in Jake's Mall.

Four companies will be giving presentations on career possibilities in the industry and inside the companies themselves. The idea is to increase student retention in BSET and increase new applications. There are some very big names, including Honeywell, Carrier, Pageau Morel, Bouthillette Parizeau, Nortek, and Baulne, among others, and some smaller names as well.

Field trips will take students to visit the state-of-the-art Bibliothèque du Boisé, and will be hosted by the Ville de Montréal engineer who is responsible for the operation of the LEEDS certified building.

Vanier College is the only English-language Cegep that offers the Building Systems Engineering Technology program. Even though there is a huge demand for graduates of this program not enough students pursue studies in this area. In particular, more young women with an interest in science should apply to this program that provides students the expertise necessary to design heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in modern buildings.

"I say architects design the structure of a building and building technologists design what's inside," says Karina Bagryan a Vanier BSET. "We learn everything needed to design safe and comfortable environments in all types of buildings. We apply the theory and principles of engineering to develop, operate and test the electrical, lighting, plumbing, and fire protection systems along with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning operations of any modern building. We are creative designers. I find that exciting."

Many Vanier Building Systems Engineering Technology students have jobs lined up long before they complete their college studies. The offers come with very interesting starting salaries at many prestigious companies or institutions. Even so, about 20% to 30% of graduates postpone working full-time and pursue university studies in Building Engineering, as did Karina who also holds an engineering degree from Concordia University.
