"You've got to be well organized if you're heading for a Double DEC."

How Bianca Pietracupa manages to keep up with her studies in a Science and Music Double DEC and still participate in as many activities outside of class as she does, is astonishing. But then she is rather a bubbly, energetic sort of person. "When I enrolled in the Double DEC I knew it would be a challenge. And although I've always been involved in singing competitions, piano lessons and enriched programs, the Double DEC was an entirely new experience for me. It requires a lot of organization."

A Double DEC requires balancing personal interest with school work. As if her studies weren't enough to keep her busy, Bianca also teaches piano and voice at a private music school and has worked as a music animator at Supercamp a children's summer day camp at Vanier. On top of all that, she has also sung solo with the West Island Student Theatre Association and played a lead role in selections from Mozart's opera Cosi fan Tutte, which toured local high schools to promote the Vanier Music Department.

But her life is not only about music. "I've always enjoyed Physics. When my physics teacher asked me to be an in-class tutor, it was a great honour for me because I had worked so hard in this subject. I was excited to pass on the knowledge I had acquired."

Bianca has also found time to write for The Insider, the Vanier student newspaper. Among her journalistic coups, she interviewed Vanier alumnus, Mutsumi Takahashi and Vanier music teacher and composer, Robert Jones.

"To achieve balance, it is important to make the time for friends. Friends have played an important role in my school life. We help each other by supporting and encouraging one another. We are always there for each other. We began as seven Double DEC students and three years later, we are still together!"

Where is Bianca headed? "I plan on pursuing a degree in Law with the intention of practicing in the entertainment industry. I want to protect the rights of artists. As a performer, I understand the difficulties experienced by musicians within the industry, particularly with intellectual property disputes, pay and labour rights."
