The Vanier College Animal Health Department will be hosting a canine blood donation clinic on November 18th, 2021, as part of the 3rd year Hematology course. This activity will take place in collaboration with the Canine Blood Bank operated out of the Veterinary School in Ste-Hyacinthe, CHUV (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vétérianire - -Banque de sang).

Dr Marie-Claude Blais DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, and specialist in transfusion medicine and Animal Health Technician Stephanie Chagnon TSA will be participating.

Healthy dogs between 1 and 7 years of age, weighing at least 25 kg with easygoing temperaments make excellent donor candidates. The actual blood collection takes less than 10 minutes. Afterwards, the dogs are rewarded with canned food, which they very enthusiastically gobble up!

The collected blood is chilled and brought back to the CHUV- Banque de sang where it is then separated into its components of red blood cells and plasma. Thus, within 48 to 72 hours, red blood cells collected at Vanier can be transported to veterinary facilities across Canada from Victoria B.C. to Saint John’s Newfoundland.

Through their participation in the canine blood clinic, Vanier AHT students have an excellent opportunity to acquire and perfect a unique skill set they can then offer future employers.
