Vanier College is pleased to announce that its annual English Symposium will take place November 2-4, 2022. Under this year’s theme of English Studies in the 21st Century: Past, Present and Future, the symposium will explore the history of the English language, look at literary theories, plurilingualism, Indigenous pedagogies, and anti-racist black pedagogies. One highlight of the week will be a Student Panel on Multilingualism on Wed., Nov. 2, (12:30 - 1:30 p.m.) when Vanier students from a variety of backgrounds will discuss being Quebec students who speak two or more languages and how the linguistic pressures they grapple with every day affect them.
Assistant Professor Daniel Pratt from McGill University will give a talk entitled Challenging World Literature, which will explore a non-national basis for World Literature.
Dr. Morgan Kahentonni Phillips, McGill University, will describe the First Peoples’ Postsecondary Storytelling Exchange, a project aimed at improving the post-secondary experience for future generations.
On Thursday, November 3, writer and columnist, Toula Drimonis, will give a talk entitled _Creating New and Hybrid Languages (_Chapter Reading, “English, Frenglish, Greeklish”: We, The Others: Allophones, Immigrants and Belonging in Canada that will look at the xenophobia, ethno-nationalism, and fear of the other that leads to the belief that immigration is a polluting force.
Musician, songwriter and producer, Maky Lavender will discuss Multilingualism and Music, describe his career and and perform one of his bilingual pop-rap-rock recordings.
Amir Kalan, McGill University, will talk about Writing in other People’s Language: Immigration, Textual Regulation, and Assimilation and the use of writing as a strategy for the assimilation of immigrants.
Nathalie Batraville, Simone de Beauvoir Institute, Concordia University, will discuss Othering Discourses: Past and Present and connect it to police and prison abolition movements.
