Update: In fall 2024, a referendum was held and a majority of students voted against keeping the health and dental insurance plan. As a result, this plan is no longer offered to Vanier students.
The Vanier College Students Association is pleased to announce that students at Vanier now have access to health and dental insurance. A majority of students voted in favor of the decision during a referendum.
As part of the plan, students will pay $144 annually for health and dental insurance. However, students can also choose to purchase only the health plan at $30 per semester, or just a dental plan at $18 per semester.
The insurance plan covers such things as vaccinations, medical equipment, a semi-private hospital room and other medical needs up to $5000 a year, vision care up to $105 a year and dental coverage up to $500 per year. Participation in the plan is optional and any student can opt out without a penalty.
According to the plan students will pay 2/3 of the costs during the winter semester, which will also carry through the summer with the remaining 1/3 to be paid during the fall semester.
As part of the insurance plan, students can also access the Empower Me website that offers a free 24/7 online confidential support service for counselling covering a wide range of mental health needs and crisis situations as well as emergency services.
“Making an affordable plan available to students at Vanier remains one of the Association’s greatest missions. I am pleased that students will now have access to a number of different services that will help not only their physical health but also their mental health. Students will also now have access to legal protection services, something that I hope will mitigate the consequences of our youth’s lack of sufficient representation in court,” said Kareem Brochu, Chairman & Founder, Student Insurance Board of Directors, Vanier College Students Association.
