A fun and unlikely Vanier College collaboration resulted in the addition of a Vanier-branded plastic horse hoof to a prestigious veterinary school collection.
Earlier this semester, Jennifer Jobin, a teacher in Vanier Animal Health Technology, paid an impromptu visit to Vanier’s Makerspace with an idea: Animal anatomical models cost a fortune. Could we 3D-print them ourselves?
Anghelos Coulon, the Makerspace technician, accepted the challenge and combined, tweaked and modified different models to create items that would be useful to Animal Health Technology students: An alpaca head to practice harnessing, a horse leg to bandage, and the underside of a horse hoof to practice cleaning.
Jennifer brought the hoof along during a visit to the Centre de simulation vétérinaire at the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire de l’Université de Montréal, a lab with an extensive collection of anatomical models (see video).
The technicians were impressed with the accuracy of the model and asked if their Centre could purchase one. Jennifer and Anghelos decided to instead print another hoof, which they donated to the University on October 29th, 2025.
It is now part of the collection!
