Vanier College and the Vanier Model United Nations are pleased to announce that the College will be hosting its second Model UN Conference. The event will be held at Vanier on Saturday, April 27th and Sunday, April 28th 2019.
The main objective of Model United Nations events is to raise awareness of international issues, politics, cultural diversity and the UN within high schools, colleges and universities. At MUN conferences, groups of students choose from different topics that they research and subsequently debate. The topics discussed within the committees are diverse and include globalization, the environment, security, human rights, poverty, and other current international issues. Through participating in MUN conferences, students gain invaluable skills in leadership, public speaking, debating, collaboration, and research.
“I’m very pleased that Vanier is hosting another MUN conference this year, and it has been amazing seeing the community coming together to build a successful event. VMUN is once again looking to deliver a fun and engaging experience for new and experienced delegates alike. Our aim is to provide a supportive learning environment for both delegates and staffers, and encourage participants to delve deeper into the exciting world of MUN,” said Melinda Meng, Secretary-General of VMUN 2019.
The Vanier conference will see students from Montreal-area high schools and cegeps competing against each other by debating different topics.
Delegates will be able to choose from two Specialized Agencies, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and three Crisis committees. Zombie apocalypse enthusiasts will be able to regale themselves in the Walking Dead Crisis committee, while delegates who appreciate fast-paced scenarios with shifting stakes may find themselves on either side of the Central African Republic Civil War JCC.
