Vanier Celebrates Women of Science Oct. 7-11, 2019

October 4, 2019

For the seventh year running, Vanier College will hold Women of Science Week from October 7th to 11th. It’s a week celebrating remarkable women researchers and discussing what it means for women to work in science today. All events will be in the Auditorium (A-103).

Monday, October 7 at 10:00 AM: Assya Trofimov, PhD candidate in Computer Science at L’institut de recherche en immunologie et en cancérologie (IRIC) de l’Université de Montréal will present How deep learning can uncover secrets of the adaptive immune system. “As a computational biologist, I develop algorithms that analyse large quantities data to model how the immune system targets and eliminates infected or cancerous cells.”

Monday, October 7 at 2:30 PM: Celeste Ferrus (Physics), Stephanie Fiore (Aerospace Engineering), Stephanie Beram (Biochemistry), Concordia, will present: Inspire to Let the New Generation Aspire: How Concordians are making a difference. They will describe what started off as a Haiti-exclusive education project and has become an outreach, mentorship and networking club geared towards creating a better future for the STEM fields.

Tuesday, October 8 at 10:00 AM: Sokmean Nou, Founder and CEO of Calixa Technologies, will present: Transitioning from Consuming Technology to Building Technology. Sokmean studied Health Sciences at Vanier College prior to completing her Bachelor of Business Administration at HEC Montreal. She launched Calixa Technologies earlier this year, a Montreal-based startup that leverages on machine vision to detect consumer styles and preferences in a streamlined manner.

Wednesday, October 9 at 12:30 PM: A panel discussion with Celeste Ferrus (Physics at Concordia), Camille Bernier-Tremblay (Mechanical Engineering at Concordia), Danielle Vandolder (Computer Science at Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science), and Yasmine Bouguerche (Math and Statistics, McGill) will explore barriers, mentors, inspirations, choices and advice and take questions from our students.

Wednesday, October 9 at 2:30 PM: Guylaine Archambault, General Director of Armand Frappier Museum will present: Science Museums – collaborative work between scientists and communicators. She will describe the establishment of programs that partner with science research to help citizens discern real science and facts from the rest.

Thursday, October 10 at 8:30 AM: Lisa Dang, PhD candidate in Physics at McGill and Melissa Marquette, MSc candidate in Physics at McGill will discuss Exoplanet research.

Friday, October 11th at 10 AM : Anouk Béraud, MSc candidate in Condensed Matter at L’institut de recherché en immunologie et en cancérologie (IRIC) de l’Université de Montréal will present : Using Physics to Detect Cancer : Perspective of a Young Scientist describing technology aimed at detecting cancer at the single-molecule level.

Friday, October 11th at 1:00 PM: Dr. Karine Auclair, Professor in Department of Chemistry at McGill University will present: Science at work to make chemistry greener and save lives. This presentation will discuss not only the importance of scientific research but also the discovery, in the Auclair group, of new environment friendly processes that use wastes as a starting material, as well as investigations to identify new ways to treat infections without antibiotics.
