Special Education Techniques unveil an inspirational mural

March 4, 2026

On Monday, March 2, 2026, the Special Education Techniques Department unveiled a large mural on the walls of the department, that depicts the evolution of a larva, to a chrysalis to a fully formed monarch butterfly. Some 50 people celebrated the work of twelve Vanier muralists from Student Life who have been working on the project since December.

“The stages of the butterfly’s development illustrate the empowerment, change, growth, and evolution that are at the heart of Specialized Educators and the individuals they work with,” says Dayna Morrow, teacher and Coordinator in the department. “We deeply appreciate and are thrilled with the creativity and hours of hard work put in by the muralists. They truly captured the essence of SET.”

“Growth and change form a lifelong journey, and the butterfly’s process symbolizes the growth, change and metamorphosis of our students throughout their time in the Special Education Techniques program but also the transformation that our clients make working with a Specialized Educator, and their growth once their needs are met.”

The colorful mural starts outside the SET department as a tree with a larva on a branch. The branch reaches inside the SET lounge and snakes along the walls. Along the way, the larva changes into a chrysalis, then finally transforms into the monarch butterfly. The monarch is painted with wings but no body, so that one can stand between the wings and take a photo as the empowered butterfly.

“We really are enjoying the mural, which is likely the largest on campus. Many people have been coming in to see it and taking an interactive photo with the butterfly wings,” concluded Dayna.

Clearly the mural is an inspiration for everyone.
