New secularism provisions under Law 9 take effect Sept. 1
Following the adoption of Law 9 (Loi sur le renforcement de la laïcité au Québec) by the Quebec National Assembly, new provisions related to religious practices will apply at Vanier College as of September 1, 2026.
The changes required by the law apply to the entire Vanier community, including students, staff and members of the public who are on campus or receiving services from the College.
The provisions include the requirement to have an uncovered face when receiving College services, the prohibition of religious practices on campus, and forthcoming changes to religious accommodations. The wearing of religious symbols remains permitted, and First Nations and Inuit cultural and spiritual practices are exempt from certain provisions.
