New Irving Graif Memorial Scholarship unveiled

April 14, 2026

The Vanier College Architectural Technology department unveiled the new Irving Graif Memorial Scholarship on April 2, 2026 in the presence of students, current and retired staff and family. Lisa Yachnin, retired teacher and former coordinator, gave a heartwarming speech on Irving’s dedication and passion, while joking about his aversion to modern technology. Her touching remarks drew both laughter and a few tears from the audience.

Irving’s sons Michael and Paul both gave moving speeches, before officially unveiling the new scholarship. Congratulations to the inaugural winners: second-year students Tasnim Hossain and Charlotte Boelen, who will each receive a cheque for $500.

Over 150 people attended the event, including Academic Dean Sandrina Joseph and Faculty Dean Haritos Kavallos. Some of the retirees in attendance included former coordinators Zoya Duba and Xavier Trevino, as well as retired Faculty Dean Michael Sendbuehler. Wine was served at the event, in honour of Irving, a wine connoisseur who loved sharing a drink with friends and family.

Irving passed away in November 2025 at the age of 89. He will be remembered for his warm personality, his love of teaching, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his dedication to students. We are grateful for the Graif family’s generous donation, honouring the late teacher who taught in the department from the 1970s until 2023.
