Scholarships
This year's Meg Sircom Memorial Scholarship recipient is Mahima Patel, a Health Science student. Honourable Mentions have gone to Mehnaz Noori (Social and Cultural Sciences) and Huy James Vien Ha (Computer Sciences and Math).
Open to all Vanier students, this annual award recognized excellence in creative writing.
"The English department has created a beautiful tradition to honour their colleague and friend’s memory and legacy. This celebration is also a special way to provide our students the opportunity to showcase their creative sides through various pieces of writing. This year, I was impressed with how open and sincere these authors were in sharing the protagonists’ personal perspectives" said Dean Kelly Purdy.
The selection committee appreciated the emotional precision of Mahima Uresh Patel's submission, which explored themes of belonging, self-erasure, and acceptance. Mehnaz Noori’s submission stood out for its powerful and introspective writing and Huy James Viên Ha’s text was remarked for its rich imagery and profound reflexions.
The Meg Sircom Memorial Scholarship for English and Creative Writing was established in 2011, in memory of Vanier College English teacher Margaret (Meg) Sircom, who had died of breast cancer in January of that year. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a Vanier College student based on their outstanding grades in at least two English courses and a 5-to-15-page portfolio of creative written work.
