Vanier College is pleased to announce that Communications, Media and Studio Arts Art teacher Keith Orkusz has been recognized by Alliance Sport-Études as part of their program, Tag ton prof, which honours teachers who support student athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits. This year’s 9th edition of the program, honored 29 teachers from 25 cegeps and 4 universities selected from 200 nominations submitted by student athletes from all over the province. It is Communications student and elite acrobatic skier, Juliette Auger-Hamelin, who nominated Keith for his support of her studies during her pursuit of athletic accomplishments.
“One of the teachers who had a profound impact on my academic journey is Mr. Keith Orkusz,” says Juliette. “He is one of the few art teachers in my department. This teacher made a huge impression on me not only because of his teaching style, but also because of the tremendous flexibility he showed toward my athletic commitments.”
“He also took into account times when I was mentally overwhelmed because of my sport and needed extra time for certain exams and assignments. He would also set aside specific times in his schedule to come to school just for me when I had to retake exams. He also taught and inspired me to become a better artist, to push my limits, and to step out of my comfort zone during the many projects we had to do. He showed me new ways of looking at life and the arts and encouraged me to engage with them, as well as a way to express myself better.”
“Keith supported me during my absences for sports; he gave me make-up dates that worked for both of us. He adjusted his expectations, understanding that my art projects couldn’t be as extensive as those of other students because I was never home and literally had to create my paintings and drawings during training camps.”
“This teacher changed me, both as an artist and as an athlete. Thank you, Keith, for your support!”
