Get Ready for Vanier’s GameJam in January

November 29, 2021

Here’s a great way to kick off the new year: for students interested in gaming, Vanier College will hold a GameJam on January 13 and 14, 2022.

“GameJams are amazing events where students can learn to develop their skills in creativity, innovation and teamwork,” says teacher, game designer and organizer Avery Rueb. “A lot of our students love to play all kinds of games, and a GameJam is an event where they can learn how to make a card game, board game or a video game.”

To inspire and help GameJam participants, mentors from McGill and Montreal video game studios will run tutorials in using the Unity program and in game design.

The event starts on Thursday, January 13, when students will brainstorm game ideas and form teams. There will then be very quick workshops for students to make their different games. On Friday, students will continue to work on their card, board or video game prototype. Students will also learn to present their project in a quick 90-second pitch presentation.

Throughout the 2-day event mentors will provide feedback to keep students motivated and on track. Then at the end of the second day, judges will hand out awards for games including best game as well as best art, best design and best game pitch.

The event is free and open to all cégep student participants. No need to pack a lunch, there will be free food for both days: breakfast, lunch and dinner including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options!

There is room for 50 participants so spread the word and encourage interested students to prepare for a fun two days and sign up at: https://forms.gle/cGDTwbwvM21aDypZ7
