Former Cheetah Samuel Emilus brings the Grey Cup to Vanier

May 6, 2026

Greeted by students, faculty, staff and the media, on April 28th, Samuel Emilus, Champion Saskatchewan Roughrider brought the Grey Cup back to the school where his career was launched. It was a special moment for Emilus but also for students and staff. “It’s amazing. He came here. If he can do it, others can too,” exclaimed one student. "We’re happy for him. It’s a great thing. It’s inspiring for all of us! It means everything is possible!”

Samuel Emilus himself expressed gratitude to everyone at Vanier that helped him and said he felt he had to make sure they got to see the Grey Cup.

There was a lineup of people taking photos next to the award-winner player. Students were grinning ear to ear, clearly enthralled and excited to welcome Samuel back to Vanier and claim him as one of their own. Coach Joe Culzac beamed as he recollected the drive and dedication as well as the promise Samuel held when at Vanier, and the superb delivery, he has made on all of them.

Mireille Béland, Coordinator of Access Services, Indigenous Student Services and Student Life, who knew Samuel as a Cheetah, was thrilled with his visit. “His presence is very inspiring to our student athletes through his success, commitment, and passion for excellence. Thank you, Samuel Emilus, for bringing the Grey Cup back to Vanier and reminding our student athletes that dedication, perseverance, and believing in yourself can turn dreams into reality.”

Samuel Emilus played for the Cheetahs from 2015 to 2017 and was awarded Special team player of the year in 2017; and was selected on the RSEQ division 1 All-star team. Before playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, he received a full NCAA division 1 Scholarship to UMASS university in the US and then transferred to Louisiana Tech University for his final season.

In 2022, Emilus was selected 7th overall at the CFL draft by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. This past year, Emilus had an amazing season, and won Most Outstanding Canadian in the 2025 Grey Cup after catching 10 passes for 106 yards in the final.

Congratulations Samuel Emilus!
