Building Systems Engineering Technology wins 2019 ASHRAE Awards

May 22, 2019

Vanier College is pleased to announce that the Building Systems Engineering Technology (B.S.E.T) Department received five awards from ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers), the organization of engineers that sets worldwide standards for Building Engineering.

The Montreal chapter of ASHRAE presents annual awards to the most deserving students, YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE) branches, and teacher-advisors. This year, Vanier College swept the awards ceremony beating out stiff competition from several universities. B.S.E.T received the following awards:

  • ASHRAE 2019 Scholarship winner: Elena Kate Bowell, 2nd-year B.S.E.T. student
  • ASHRAE 2019 Scholarship runner up: Mahfuzara Parvin, 2nd-year B.S.E.T. student
  • ASHRAE Étudiant Méritant 2019 (Excellence Académique et Leadership): Kurt Yi Zheng Xie, graduating B.S.E.T. student
  • ASHRAE Student Branch of the Year Award: Vanier College Y.E.A. Chapter
  • ASHRAE Student Advisor of the Year Award: Anthony Belleau, Professor, Vanier College, Department of Building Systems Engineering Technology

For many years, Vanier College’s B.S.E.T. department has maintained an active local ASHRAE student branch, part of Y.E.A. (Young Engineers in ASHRAE), and actively participated in promoting student activities and events at Vanier College. The awards recognized the participation of Vanier College’s students, teachers, and staff in many educational events, including the 2018/2019 ASHRAE Career day held at Vanier on P.A.S.S. day in October 2018, field trips, and guest speakers.

“It is truly special to be recognized in such a “sweeping” manner,” said Ilya Meldrum, coordinator of B.S.E.T. “We were really hoping that one of our students would win the ASHRAE scholarship, and that our student branch would be recognized for the work that they did over the past year, but we didn’t expect to receive all of these awards. B.S.E.T. teacher Anthony Belleau and student Kurt Yi Zheng Xie and all of our student branch members worked very hard to promote B.S.E.T. at ASHRAE over the past year, and they really deserved this recognition.”

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today.

Congratulations to Vanier College’s Young Engineers in ASHRAE student branch of 2018/2019, and to our Building Systems Engineering Technology Department.
