Book Launch March 9th : Stephen Cohen's Getting Physics: Nature's Laws as a Guide to Life

March 1, 2023

Vanier College is pleased to announce that, Physics teacher, Stephen Cohen, author of one of the top ten articles in Scientific American for 2022 and 2017 co-recipient of the National Ken Spencer Award for teaching, has published Getting Physics: Nature's Laws as a Guide to Life. The book aims to introduce physics concepts, including Mechanics, Electricity, Waves, and Modern Physics, without resorting to much math, so anyone can enjoy it.

Story-telling and humour make topics like mechanics and electricity fun to read about, while metaphors take you deeper. A very personal approach makes reading a pleasure. This is a book about science but also about being a scientist and it is written by someone who passionately loves and enjoys science. It should surely inspire readers to see science as the exciting world it is.

Although the chapters on physics are written with college students in mind and are ideally suited to be integrated into their introductory courses, chapters on engineering, aerospace, and future technologies are lighter and meant for everyone.

Getting Physics is unique in that its first draft was reviewed by a panel of Vanier College students. Years of integration of the material within the classroom also allowed Stephen Cohen to modify the content to clarify areas that students found confusing.

**Invitation: Book Launch and Signing on March 9, 5 pm to 6:30 pm, STEM Centre (D-301) On March 9, a book launch and signing will take place at Vanier College in the STEM Centre. In recognition of the extent to which Vanier students played a role in the development of his book, Stephen Cohen will donate one half of all profits derived from sales of the book in 2023 to the Vanier College Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to helping Vanier College maintain its high academic standing and enhancing the educational life of its students.

"I have used sections in it as pre-reading and reflective writing assignments in my physics courses to allow students to come to class prepared to undertake a new topic. Physics can be overwhelming for many students. A big part of that comes from the overload of facing a new concept and then the mathematical rigor that follows in a span of an hour. My approach allows those two parts to be decoupled," says Stephen Cohen.
