Michael passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024, in his seventy-ninth year, predeceased by his beloved wife Esther. He is the loving father of Jeremy, Robie and Brian and father-in-law of Joanna and Toby; the cherished grandfather of Orli and Natan; Samuel and Julian; and the son of the late Israel and the late Sarah (Gold) Hockenstein. He is the dear brother and brother-in-law of Bernice Hockenstein, Bunny and Daniel Golan, the brother-in-law of Terry Rozencwajg and David Benatar; and the closest friend of Paul (Daphne) Nahmiash. Michael will be deeply missed by his nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Michael began teaching at Vanier in the 1980’s–when a friend asked him to fill in at the last minute “just for one semester”–and retired 30 years later. He took up the mantle of Commerce department coordinator twice during his time as a teacher in the department. He was a lifelong learner who earned a Master’s Degree on the topic while he taught at Vanier.
