Marilyn Caplan (Née Steinhouse)

Peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at home. Beloved wife of Neil Caplan. Devoted mother of Ben (Eileen), and Hanna. Dear sister and sister-in-law of Joyce and Harvey Kolodny; and sister-in-law of Don and Janet Caplan. Loving aunt of Michael, Joëlle, Emma, and Katie and great-aunt to Will, and Liam. Marilyn will be greatly missed by her extended family, friends, and all those who knew her.

Our sweet Mara is now at rest following three tumultuous months wrestling with cancer that relentlessly advanced while eluding medical diagnosis or treatment.

Marilyn was a well-loved and dedicated educator who spent much of her career at the Learning Centre of Vanier College, offering one-on-one tutoring as well as working with native students and students with disabilities. After her retirement she became active in volunteer work with immigrants, asylum seekers, and seniors.

She was a life-long learner herself, working on improving her French, social dancing, and quilting. Her active outdoor life was devoted to gardening, walking, kayaking, swimming, and skating. She loved travelling and spending time at our cottage on Lac Cornu. Annually she took great pleasure hosting her extended family for potluck Passover seders at our home.

The family deeply appreciates the skill and compassion of Marilyn’s GP, Dr Virginia Myles, and the dedicated healthcare professionals at the MUHC. Special thanks for the superb follow-up care brought to our home by nurse Sophie Dupont and her lovely CLSC René-Cassin-Cavendish team.

Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, June 15, at 2:00 pm. Burial at the Dorshei Emet Reconstructionist Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Donations in Marilyn’s memory may be made to the “Marilyn & Neil Caplan Scholarship Fund” c/o the Vanier College Foundation, 514-744-7025. In furthering her legacy, these scholarships will be awarded to exceptional students overcoming obstacles.
