SEGNORET, Maria Luisa 1920 – 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce that Maria Luisa Segnoret passed away on Monday, November 7, 2011. She was a great artist and painter of Chilean origin who taught fine arts at Vanier College, as well as in Chile and California (USA).

She leaves behind 3 children, Marilu, Dominique and Octavio, her seven grandchildren, Nicolas, Violeta, Sofia, Gerardo, Dominique, Gabriel and Emilio, her nephews and nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces, other relatives and numerous friends. Her strength and courage made her an extraordinary woman. The family would like to thank Mrs. Helena Gomez for her care and compassion and the wonderful people of pavillon 1er Ouest of the Institut de Gériatrie de Montreal.

A ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, your testimonies of sympathy can be shown by a donation to the Foundation of Institut de Gériatrie de Montréal.

The late Henry Lehmann posted the following bio which appears on Maria Luisa’s Facebook page: “Maria Luisa Segnoret’s art navigates somewhere between the Jungian oceanic unconscious and the shores of so-called reality. Her work, at once playful and sophisticated, dovetails a deeply personal vision and major European currents, all this seasoned with a sense of the absurd. This much-traveled daughter of a Chilean diplomat grew up in Santiago; she eventually worked at the Museum Fine Arts of Santiago, where she curated shows and organized activities. When she arrived in Montreal in the violent wake of the coup that removed Allende, Sengoret was not only an expert museum administrator and an astute critic of art, but also a sublimely talented and accomplished artist in her own right. Her work is well known and much exhibited in her homeland as well as in parts of Europe.”
