It is with deep sadness that Vanier learned of the death of retired teacher Jean-Paul Baril. Jean-Paul passed away at Notre-Dame Hospital on June 11, 2011 surrounded by friends and after a short stay in intensive care while under the attentive and compassionate care of the professional staff.

Jean-Paul was born in Lorrainville (Témiscamingue) on August 15, 1931 to Lucienne Larouche and Albert Baril. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and his sister Marcelle.

After completing his studies at Collège Saint-Laurent, l’École normale Jacques Cartier, l’Université d’Ottawa and McGill University, Jean-Paul taught at Lorrainville, Témiscaming, Maxville, Lancaster and Etobicoke (Ont.) as well as at Carleton University.

He served as principal of Georges-Vanier High School before founding the Modern Languages Department at Vanier College. He also taught in Beijing and Rabat.

In addition to pursuing his interests in music, literature, sociology and politics, Jean-Paul had served in a volunteer capacity at L’Itinéraire since 1994. A memorial ceremony was held at the L’Itinéraire on June 22nd.
