Vanier College is pleased to announce that two Vanier teams of computer science students won top honours at the 2023 Warhacks Hackathon held at Concordia University on February 11, 2023. The Vanier teams won both First Place and Second Place honours. Competing students from the winning second place team included 4th semester Computer Science students, Valentin Atanasov, Anton Lisunov, Leonella Levy Martel and Brandon Lee Felix.

Warhacks is an introductory hardware Hackathon designed specifically for CEGEP students to build their own robot from scratch. This year, after receiving a tutorial covering programming, controlling motors and reading data from sensors, students built their own robot. The robot then had to complete certain tasks such as drive along a road, stop when it spotted an obstacle and continue ahead once an organizer cleared the way. The robot also had to make several turns, stop at any black lines, then continue on its way. The goal was to design a robot that could complete as many tasks as possible.

This is the first time this event has been held since 2019. In all, four CEGEPS, each with two teams, competed as well as teams from Concordia University. In hackathons everyone receives the same challenges and requests. Teams had 4 hours to build their robot, before then competing to demonstrate its capabilities. At that point, judges consisting of professors or industry professionals, evaluated the progress in completing tasks and the final robot design.

"Given that cegep students are also competing against university teams, the hackathon is very challenging and inspiring," says Computer Science teacher Alex Steinheuser Vilvert. "Having won both First and Second Place at the Warhacks Hackathon, and also having won the Morgan Stanley hackathon back in November, Vanier students are now on fire and ready to take on more hackathons!"

Congratulations to all the winning Computer Science students.
