Vanier College is thrilled to open the Vanier College Music School with classes starting on September 19, 2022.  Since the school was first announced last spring, its mission has expanded, and the school will offer after-school and weekend lessons in all instruments as well as voice.

The closing of the McGill Conservatory of Music in the summer means that Vanier is now the only English-speaking public music school in the city.  The need is great since the gradual disappearance of school bands and music classes in Montreal elementary and secondary schools has meant that students wanting to study music at the Cegep level are not able to get any training in preparation for advanced learning.

“In collaboration with the department of Continuing Education, Vanier College decided to respond to this need by opening an after-hours Music School for students to learn about music while still young,” says Alena Perout, Dean of Faculty of Social Science, Commerce, Arts, Letters and Music at Vanier College. “With music programming reduced due to limited funds at public schools, many potentially talented young musicians are being lost in the community.”

“Music lessons should not just be for the elite,” says Perout.  To facilitate and support students, Alena Perout has spearheaded the creation of the Sheldon Sazant Memorial Fund. All students under the age of 18 can apply for a scholarship, which will be used to subsidize the cost of lessons as well as the rental or purchase of instruments.
