Vanier College is pleased to announce that it has received a SILVER rating through AASHE’s STARS Sustainability framework, (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education). The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS) is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. Tied to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Accord, which Vanier signed in 2019, the STARS framework evaluates performance on environmental criteria, as well as social and economic ones.

“Getting here required a detailed reporting process that involved dozens of people across many departments of the college and spanned two years,” says Heather Elliott, Vanier Sustainability Officer.  “It’s time to celebrate our collective work and we would like to share our appreciation for the many people who contributed! For more details, view Vanier’s publicly available report on the STARS website.”

But the work is far from over! Now that Vanier has finalized its initial report and received its rating, the College plans to use it as a tool to identify strategic areas of focus for revising its 5-year Sustainability Action Plan in the spring. Over the coming months Vanier will be reaching out to many departments across the college to discuss how to move forward to continue on its ambitious sustainability commitments, outlined in the Strategic Plan.
