Vanier Students receive MNA Marwah Rizqy Bursaries for Perseverance and Engagement during the Pandemic

July 5, 2021

Vanier College is pleased to announce that 10 students received bursaries from St-Laurent MNA Marwah Rizqy. Eight bursaries rewarded student perseverance and engagement during the pandemic, and two bursaries recognized student engagement in French studies. The ten recipients each received a $500 bursary and an honorific certificate from the National Assembly, given by M. Rizqy at a brief ceremony held at Vanier on June 28, 2021.

While distributing the grants, Marwah Rizqy announced that it would become an annual event. "I did not come from a wealthy family, and without grants and scholarships, I would not have been able to pursue law school. I understand how important the help of others is for students. I hope this distribution of grants will become a new tradition that will continue on every year," she said.

The winners of bursaries for student perseverance and engagement during the pandemic are:

  • Rivka Gabay (Respiratory and Anaesthesia Technology)
  • Kate Botto-Gribbon (Social Science (Sports & Leisure Major)
  • Victoria Marcoux (General Social Science)
  • Breana Sanders (Health Science)
  • Kim Vy Le (Continuing Education – Science)
  • Maia Fukuyama-Kaplan (Social Science (Psychology Major)
  • Casey Pantaleon (Architectural Technology)
  • Nethia Honey Tangub (Special Care Counselling)

Students had to apply for these bursaries and the winners were chosen out of 442 applications. The selection committee stated that it was clear that all of the students persevered in their own way, but the committee was particularly impressed by what the eight winning students have overcome, combined with their student engagement inside and outside the Vanier community.

Teachers in the French Department familiar with the work and progress of their students selected two winners for their engagement and commitment to their French studies.

  • Perlita Coral (Nursing) won the bursary for engagement in her French studies via tutorials and other learning activities.
  • Carmel Moran (Science and Music Double DCS) won a bursary for his engagement in extracurricular French activities.

“I’d like to congratulate all the students who earned these bursaries for perseverance in their studies during a year like no other. I would also like to thank Marwah Rizqy for her generosity as well as her past and continued support of Vanier College and its students. It’s been a difficult and challenging time for everyone, and knowing that hard work is recognized and supported by our MNA for St Laurent, encourages students for their future endeavors,” said Vanier College Director General John McMahon

Congratulations to these students who persevered and were engaged throughout the pandemic.
