Vanier College Students win awards at the Montreal United Nations Conference

November 28, 2014

What better way to learn about politics and international relations than by participating in simulations. This year, several Vanier students were delegates at two Model United Nations events where they won awards for their outstanding performances.

Big winners at the Montreal United Nations Conference (MUNC) November 21-23, 2014, Vanier sent 11 delegates to the Montreal United Nations Conference (MUNC), held at Dawson College. The students won 5 awards, one of the highest number amassed by any college there. The award winning students were: Tiran Rahimian Bajgiran (Best Delegate); Victor Percoco (Honourable Mention); Gab Bellina (Outstanding Delegate); Gabriel Guppy (Best Delegate) and Santiago Arciniegas (Outstanding Delegate).

VCSA Society of History and Politics The students are all members of the Society of History and Politics, which serves as Vanier's representative group within the Model United Nations Association. The club members are all interested in contemporary and past issues, specifically as to how they have been or could have been resolved.

Model UN events - a great way to learn Model UN conferences take place several times a year and are simulations and competitions, in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Participants are placed in committees and assigned countries, organizations, or political figures to represent. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they then debate with their fellow delegates in committee.

Secondary School United Nations Symposium Earlier in November another group of 17 Vanier students participated in SSUNS – the Secondary School United Nations Symposium that was held at McGill University.

Congratulations to all the student delegates for their hard work and remarkable achievements at both Model United Nations Events.
