Sustainability
Once again, this year, Vanier College is proud to announce that it has maintained the Excellence Level certification as a Cégep Vert du Québec for 2024-2025 from ENvironnement JEUnesse (ENJEU).
“Vanier College is proud that its efforts towards improving sustainability have been recognized, especially since raising awareness of environmental issues is one of the college’s priorities,” says Stuart Wiseman, Manager Health, Safety & Sustainability at Vanier College.
To obtain Cégep Vert du Québec Excellence certification, Vanier College continued to demonstrate leadership in terms of environmental awareness. This year, Vanier conducted a greenhouse gas audit, and erected a bike shelter inaugurated in early May, to encourage the use of bikes to come to Vanier.
As well, Vanier became the first CEGEP in Montreal to have fully waste-free labs (in Chemistry, Nursing, and RT) through the GoZero project. Laboratories are traditionally a major source of waste for institutions as users are required to change their gloves frequently, and plastic gloves that have touched contaminants are difficult to recycle.
“With the GoZero project implemented in March, gloves are now disposed of in green bags, which are then recycled by GoZero. GoZero also recycles other materials used in our laboratories, including PPE masks, surgical drapes, and packing and wrap materials. Thanks to the GoZero program, Vanier now has zero lab-generated waste going to landfill.,” said Stewart Wisemen, Vanier Manager, Health, Safety & Sustainability.
Students were also engaged in sustainability activities on campus. Many worked in the Vanier Gardens, and a very large number participated in the Campus Biodiversity Network activities, and Student Life sustainability workshops and activities.
The ENvironnement JEUnesse team congratulated Vanier for the continuation of its many activities and commitments to sustainability education and engagement among personnel and students.
Congratulations to all members of the Vanier Community who support the college’s sustainability efforts and projects.
