Vanier College is pleased to announce that Commerce graduate, Jon Michael Caluza, is the 2024-2025 Vanier College Valedictorian. Jon will address some 500 of his fellow graduates and their families at a graduation ceremony taking place on June 17, 2025, at Place des Arts.
In choosing Jon as Valedictorian, the selection committee was impressed with his low-key modesty and sincerity, and how he found a way to succeed and give back to his community in spite of a bumpy start at CEGEP. Like many other students, Jon started CEGEP in one program before realizing it was not the right place for him. So, he switched from Health Science to Commerce, and found his place. The change worked for him, because while working to maintain good grades, he also became involved with Vanier student life. In particular, Jon was able to explore the concerns of fellow students through a team project.
“In a class I took in winter 2024, my team and I conducted research on the impact of Bill 96 on college students in Quebec, highlighting the voices of francophone, anglophone and immigrant students. Our findings resulted in a successful research paper.” In fact, Jon and his teammate presented their research at the annual Vanier Social Science Festival in October 2024. “This presentation sparked meaningful discussions among students and staff at Vanier, giving many people the opportunity to share their opinions on an important issue during a critical time,” says Jon.
Inspired by that success, Jon went on to initiate another project in spring 2025 when he founded the VC Food Club, under the VCSA. This club aims to create a community among students, promote culinary experiences and healthy and sustainable eating, and raise awareness about food insecurity around the campus. “We conduct weekly activities where we gather volunteers and cook meals in the N building kitchen, which we then distribute to students who might be in food insecurity,” says Jon. In the space of 8 weeks, the club made and distributed 1048 meals.
Where does Jon draw his inspiration? “As an immigrant to Canada, I have learned to be content with the simple pleasures in life, something my grandmother always showed me before she passed away last year. My parents, who could only give me the gift of education, have instilled in me the value of education as a way to build a better future. I am passionate about giving back to my community and helping those in need, inspired by the lessons of resilience, humility, and acts of service my life experiences have given me.”
Congratulations to Jon Michael Caluza, the 2024-2025 Vanier College Valedictorian.
