It is with sadness that Vanier College has learned of the recent passing of retired teacher Ernst Bleichert.
Born in Montreal to German parents, Ernst grew up in Montreal. He studied at Sir George Williams University, then earned a master's degree at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Next, he completed a PhD in Plant Physiology at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, before heading to Germany where he taught for 2 years.
When he returned to Canada, he began a long career as a teacher. He taught primarily at Vanier College where he shared his love of biology, biochemistry — and, in a progressive move for the time — human sexuality. Ernst was one of the first professors in the area to offer a course on sex and love, and he loved teaching it. His students did, too.
Ernst loved life. He loved art, music, road trips, good conversation, and above all — people.
