Some newly accepted students will receive an invitation to take the French Placement test as part of their admission to Vanier. The purpose of this test is to ensure that students are registered in the appropriate French course. Upon completion of the test, students are instructed to register in a specific "A" course. Test results can be viewed in your “Progression Chart” on Omnivox.
Who has to take the test?
If you meet any of the following criteria, you will be invited to take the test.

- You graduated from high school in Quebec more than three years ago AND you have never taken a college-level credited French course, or
 
- You completed your high school studies outside Quebec, or
 
- You have successfully completed Secondary V French in an adult program

- You graduated from high school in Quebec more than three years ago AND have never taken a college-level credited French course, or
 
- You completed your high school studies outside Quebec, or
 
- You have successfully completed Secondary V French in an adult program, or
 
- You graduated from high school in Quebec less than three years ago AND successfully completed a French as a second language course in high school

If you do not meet any of the above criteria, your placement will be determined by your final grade in Secondary 5 French OR by your final grade in a Block A college-level French course.
Exemptions
You are not required to take the French Placement test if:
- You have successfully completed a 602-French course at Vanier College or at another Cegep.
 
- You did not receive a letter, or message in Omnivox, asking you to attend a French testing session as part of your admission to Vanier College.
 
- You have previously written the French Placement Test at Vanier College within the last three years.
 
About the test
- Do not use an online or electronic translation service (e.g. DeepL), Artificial Intelligence (e.g. Copilot) or any spelling and grammar checker.
 
- The test will take 1 hour.
 
- Dictionaries or other resource materials are not allowed.
 
- Please know your Access code in the invitation letter published in Omnivox.
 
- You do not have to study for the test.
 
- Components: composition, grammar and reading comprehension
