Courses

Course levels

There are 3 generic course levels in physical education, each offering a wide array of specific classes (sections). The levels are the courses that appear in students' course lists. To graduate, students need to take one class in each level (101, 102, 103). Levels 101 and 102 are pre-requisites for level 103.

  • Level 109-101, Physical Activity and Health. 109-101 courses is to expose students to the relationship between health, physical fitness and an active lifestyle. As they cover the first nine chapters of the Physical Education Manual, students will be encouraged to analyze physical activity from the standpoint of lifestyle behaviours that promote health.
  • Level 109-102, Physical Activity and Effectiveness. 109-102 courses encourage students to use a goal-oriented approach to improve the effectiveness of a physical activity, whether it is a sport, corporal expression or outdoor activity. After an initial assessment, students evaluate the physical activity in terms of their ability and attitudes; they set goals and try an approach aimed at improving their motor skills, their technique or their mastery of complex strategies. Finally, students are called upon to assess their progress.
  • Level 109-103, Physical Activity and Autonomy. 109-103 courses encourage students to incorporate physical activity into their lifestyle to benefit their overall health and fitness level by helping them to manage the factors that influence physical activity. During class hours, students will apply the knowledge they acquired in the first two courses. Through sufficient and regular practice of a health-oriented physical activity, they plan, apply and evaluate a personal physical activity program. Students follow and validate their program under the teacher’s supervision. The hours allotted for personal work enable students to do the required assignments, practice their physical activity and develop a healthy lifestyle.

Student support and community engagement initiatives

Student Attendant Program

The Student Attendant project addresses a critical challenge in education: improving success rates among students with special needs, particularly those with neuromuscular or neurodevelopmental conditions and physical disabilities. To support this, we carefully pair trained Student Attendants—who have received preparation through the Centre of Excellence for Autism Spectrum Disorder and in Adaptive Physical Education—with students with special needs, during class time. This partnership helps students successfully achieve the competencies of the Physical Education course.

Guided by our college’s mission to provide a life-enriching learning experience, this initiative promotes accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for student success. It reflects our commitment to creativity, critical thinking, fairness, and equity, while fostering collaboration, communication, and lifelong learning.

Through this hands-on, supportive approach, both Student Attendants and Student Attendees develop valuable skills, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility. Ultimately, this project enhances student success at the CEGEP level and supports the development of engaged, capable members of society.

Volleyball Extravaganza

This event is an annual Interclass Volleyball tournament that brings together our volleyball classes for some friendly competition. Supported by the VCSA, the tournament offers students in volleyball classes a chance to show off their new skills while building school spirit and connections. Whether you are spiking for the championship or cheering on your classmates, everyone has a great time in this extracurricular event!

Charity Workout

Each holiday season, our teachers host a special festive group fitness event in the main gym to support Vanier students in need. Participants are invited to bring a donation of their choice as their entry fee for the event, which all goes towards helping Vanier students. Phys Ed staff lead an energetic, high-octane one-hour group workout designed for all fitness levels. The session features upbeat music, cooperative team challenges, and a mix of cardio and strength exercises to celebrate the spirit of giving through movement. It is a fantastic opportunity for members of the Vanier community to break a sweat, have fun with friends, and make a meaningful difference for classmates during the holidays.
