Sustainability

A commitment to sustainability across campus has earned Vanier College a Gold rating through the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) framework of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
STARS is a transparent, industry-leading framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. Tied to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Accord, which Vanier signed in 2019, the STARS framework evaluates performance on environmental, social and economic criteria.
This is a significant milestone for the College, reflecting years-long work done by members of the Vanier College Advisory Committee on the Environment (VCACE) and the broader college community. The gold certification is valid through May 21, 2029.
Under the 2021–2026 Strategic Plan (Key Result 4.2.5), the College committed to “Aim for Silver AASHE certification, with a commitment to Bronze, at the minimum." With this achievement, Vanier surpasses both the minimum target of Bronze and the aspirational target of Silver, earning the highest standard of Gold.
The STARS report, submitted by Vanier's Health and Safety Manager, reflects sustainability work across the entire institution, including academics, research, campus engagement, procurement, public engagement, operations, planning, well-being, and innovation. It also highlights several areas of particular strength at Vanier, including sustainable transportation, waste reduction, the Sustainability Major, the Vanier Collective Gardens, student sustainability initiatives, campus as a living laboratory, greenhouse gas mitigation projects, biodiversity initiatives, and the integration of sustainability into curriculum and student learning.
As Vanier begins developing its next Sustainability Plan in alignment with the forthcoming 2026-2031 Strategic Plan, the STARS Gold rating provides both strong validation of progress and a useful framework for identifying where further improvements can be made.
"Thank you to everyone who contributed information, reviewed content, supported initiatives, participated in consultations, or helped build the sustainability programs and practices reflected in this report. The certification is not just a reporting achievement; it is a recognition of years of work by staff, students, faculty, administrators, and community partners." - Stewart Wiseman, Health and Safety Manager
