Choirs from Vanier and the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal join forces to present A Night of Brahms

On Tuesday, December 9th, the 70-voice Vanier College Choir under the direction of Philippe Bourque, will present « A Night of Brahms ». For this concert the Vanier Choir will share the stage with another leading Montreal choir, the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal Chorus directed by Louis Lavigueur.

This double chorus of 115 voices will perform several works by the German Romantic composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). The program includes the famous Liebeslieder Waltzes Op. 52 with piano accompaniment (Tatiana Dardykina and Anna Peletsis, Doctoral students Schulich School of Music). Next on the program, the women’s choir will present Brahms’ Four Songs Op.17, with harp and 2 French horns, and the men’s choir the Romantic composer’s Rhapsody for Alto Op. 53 featuring mezzo-soprano Geneviève Lévesque. The French horn will be played by Rachel Côté, a second year Vanier student who is studying with Jocelyn Veilleux.

Eight-part motets by J.S. Bach and F. Mendelssohn will also be performed and highlight the polyphonic character of a double choir.  And since it’s the month of December, the concert will finish off with carols to celebrate the Christmas season.

The main accompanist for the evening will be Vanier’s classical piano teacher Julia Gavrilova as well as Tatiana Dardykina and Anna Peletsis, Doctoral students Schulich School of Music who will also interpret a few Hungarian dances by Brahms.
