Biographical info from Vanier’s Sociology website:

Laura came to Montreal in 1972 as an international student. Being away from home for the first time, she was touched by the help she received from the Chinese Alliance Church. Living in a culturally diverse city gave her many opportunities to learn about the lives of immigrants. This interest was further taken up in her master thesis on the experience of Chinese post-war immigrants in Montreal. Upon graduation from McGill with a master degree in sociology in 1982, she worked in many part-time jobs in research, social services, business and teaching. In the 80s, she worked for Prof. Maurice Pinard of McGill University on Quebec Referendum, and Dr. Denise Helly on cultural communities in Montreal. She has worked for Chinese Family service in community services for a brief period of 18 months. In 1986, she started teaching part-time at Concordia University. She has taught many courses including juvenile crime and delinquency, social problems, ethnic and race relations, sociology of the family and Quebec society. She enjoys sharing her experience with her students in class.

She has lived in China, Rwanda, and England; traveled and visited many countries including Cuba, France, Egypt, Kenya, and Mexico; enjoys dancing and practicing Tai Chi and is a mother of two children.

She joined Vanier College in 1992 and has taught courses in sociology, methodology and study skills.
