Cy Cooper

It is with regret that Vanier was informed of the passing of longtime music faculty member Cy Cooper. The obituary information that appeared in the Montreal Gazette is printed below:

Suddenly at the Ottawa Civic Hospital on December 23, 2006 at the age of eighty-six. Loving husband of Hélène (née Peck) and favourite uncle to many nieces and nephews. Known as a trumpet virtuoso from an early age, Cy served his country during World War II as a soloist with the Canadian Grenadier Guards and the Canadian Army Band Overseas. Upon his return to Canada, he followed a career in music, largely in the concert, radio and professional fields during which time he studied at McGill University.
Forced to give up playing the trumpet, he turned his attention to education and taught at Montreal West High School and then at Vanier College. In 1967, Cy was honoured by the Kiwanis Club of Lakeshore Montreal for his “outstanding devotion to youth”. Cy will be remembered by generations of students who set up a music scholarship at McGill University in his honour.
