All students complete four English courses as part of their general education requirements. These courses build core skills in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking—tools you’ll use in any discipline you choose.

Courses and placement

  • Once accepted to Vanier, all students take an online English placement test.
  • Based on their results, students are placed in an introductory Block A English course (603-101), or in a non-credit preparatory course if they need additional support (after which they must still complete an introductory course).
  • After successfully completing their intro course, students take three additional English courses, one from each category:
    • Literary Genres (Block A)
    • Literary Themes (Block A)
    • A Block B course adapted to their program
  • In total, students complete four credited English courses—three Block A and one Block B—with the non-credit preparatory course added if required.
