*REMINDER* 2009-2010 TEACHING EXCELLENCE AWARD – Here is an excellent opportunity to show one of your teachers your appreciation for his/her work and commitment. Nomination forms are available on the College website by clicking on Students. Copies are also available at the V.C.S.A. office (C-214) and the Student Services reception area (C-203). You are strongly encouraged to submit the nomination form to the 2009-2010 Academic Council’s Subcommittee on Recognition of Teaching Excellence, c/o Academic Dean’s Office, located in Room F-220 by this Friday, March 12, 2010. In addition to the nomination form, all supporting documentation has to be submitted to the Committee, c/o Academic Dean’s Office by Tuesday, April 20, 2010. All nominations and selection deliberations are kept strictly confidential.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY CO-OP STUDENT SHOWCASE – Concordia University invites you to their Co-Op Student Showcase on Thursday, April 8, from 11:30am-1:30pm and from 4:00-6:00pm. Get firsthand information about Co-op experiences from senior Co-op students, discover the organizations that hire Concordia Co-op students, find out how you could begin experiencing your career as soon as possible. This showcase will take place at Concordia University in the EV Building Atrium, located at 1515 St. Catherine Street West (upstairs from the Guy-Concordia metro).

THE EPIC LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM is designed to enhance college success for new and returning students. Students who complete our series of workshops will receive a Leadership Certificate from the Student Development Office. Any Vanier student can sign up. The six workshops cover a range of topics in leadership: Philosophy of Leadership (was on Feb. 19th), Cultural Awareness(was on Mar. 5th), Stress Management, Effective Communication, Group Dynamics, and Social Justice – A Global Responsibility. The next one is scheduled for Friday, March 12th at 2:30pm. For more information and to register, come to Student Services (C-203).

CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST! Do you write poetry or short stories? Enter The Learning Centre’s Creative Writing Contest. There are cash prizes to be won, in addition to the chance of being published in one of our books! Deadline is March 26th. For rules or to submit, please see Kim in B205-D.

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT? NITE OF NATIONS AUDITIONS CONTINUE – We are seeking talented dancers, singers, and performers (students, staff, and faculty) to participate in the 2010 Nite of Nations. All interested performers must sign up with Helena Bastos in Student Services (C-203).

MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE CONTESTS

EUCLID WATERLOO MATH COMPETITION – This contest provides the opportunity to develop your mathematical problem-solving ability. It consists of 10 questions that are divided into answer only and full solution parts. A practice session will be held on Wednesday, March 10 at 12:00pm in D-505. The contest will be written on Tuesday, April 7 from 9:00-11:30am in the Amphitheatre (B-223). Sign up by March 12.

CAP PHYSICS CONTEST – This competition stresses logical and creative thinking by asking questions going beyond the expectations of the classroom. Prizes are awarded to the top students both provincially and nationally. The contest will be written on April 12 from 9am-12pm in A-476. It consists of 25 multiple choice questions and 3 long-answer problems. Sign up by March 12. A practice session will be held on Wednesday, March 31 at 12:00pm in D-508.

COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING CONTEST – This is a 15-problem, weeklong team test which develops real-world skills by emphasizing collaboration, research, and the application of technology to solve complex and difficult problems. The team will have a week (April 14-21) to complete these puzzle-style problems. Register by March 19.

SIR ISAAC NEWTON PHYSICS CONTEST – This contest consists of 12 multiple choice questions and involves basic classical mechanics and common sense. Several scholarships to Waterloo are up for grabs. A practice session will take place on Wednesday, April 28 at 12pm in D-508. The contest will be held on May 6 in N-322. Sign up by March 19.

FOURTH ANNUAL HEALTH PROMOTION FAIR – On Wednesday, March 10th from 9:00am-2:00pm in the Student Mall, third-year Nursing students will be manning 15 booths on Health Promotion geared towards our
Vanier College students. This year’s fair will include topics such as safe clubbing, assertiveness, body modification through breast implants,
bottled water safety, and stress management. The nursing students have been working on their projects since August of 2009 and involved Vanier College students in their surveys. Show your support for the hardworking Nursing students by visiting their information booths during Universal Break.

LGBTQ STUDENT GROUP – The new group for students who are lesbian, gay, transsexual, transgender, two-spirited, intersex, queer AND their friends and allies is called U.M.B.R.E.L.L.A. We’re meeting every Wednesday during Universal Break in Room A329. Come join us, get involved, and have some fun! Feel free to check us out on Facebook too!

SPOTLIGHT ON INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CAREERS – Are you preparing for a career in Information & Communications Technology? Join us for a meeting with MICROSOFT CANADA on Wednesday, March 10 at 12:00pm in the AMPHITHEATRE (Room B223). NEED AN ENGLISH PEER TUTOR? Would you like to improve your English speaking, reading, and/or writing skills? You can do this by requesting an English peer tutor from The Learning Centre. IN HER NAME AND IN HER VOICE – Winners of the “In Her Name” creative writing contest will read their works that celebrate the women that they admire. Led by Sandra Beaulieu, a funky hip hop and contemporary dance teacher from Option Danse Claire Comeau and Extravadanza, these dance workshops are sure to be a blast. MCGILL SCIENCE UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL – Members of the editorial board will talk about various fields of study in science undergraduate programs, as well as firsthand accounts of experiences with research and how to go about gaining research experience. They will also touch on scientific journalism, and the publication and communication of research. Join us on Friday, March 12, at 1pm in B-429.

ONLINE CAREER MENTORING SERVICE – The Counselling Centre is happy to announce the use of an online career mentoring service called Academos. Vanier students can simply correspond via e-mail with screened and trained volunteers who help guide and tell them about their area of expertise. Academos facilitates career choices and staying in school for students aged 14–30 by means of e-mentoring. Choosing a career is an important decision, so let Academos help. CULTURAL DIVERSITY – To celebrate cultural diversity, a discussion panel will be held on Wednesday, March 10 in A-401 at 12:00pm. This meeting will focus on how cultural diversity contributes to making a better environment in which to live. 38th ANNUAL INTRAMURAL CEGEP FESTIVAL – Come participate in this once-a-year intramural extravaganza! Information and sign-up sheets are located on the board across from the Equipment counter in the Sports Complex Main Hall. Basketball (men & women’s), badminton (men & women’s singles & doubles, mixed doubles), indoor soccer (co-recreational), volleyball (co-rec), and dodgeball (co-rec) will all be taking place. These events will be taking place at the McGill Sports Centre, located at 475 Pine Avenue West, on April 9, 2010.

VANIER ROBOTICS TEAM WINS TOP PRIZES! The Vanier Robotics Team did exceptionally well at this year’s Canadian Robotics Challenge, winning 3rd place overall, and 1st place in several categories. We were 1st place for Journal, 1st place for Video, and 2nd place for Website. As well, the Robot made it up to the quarter finals and finished 9th in the competition. The team received a nomination for their Kiosk and placed in the top six, in addition to earning an Honorable Mention for their teamwork. Congratulations to all the members of the Vanier Robotics Team!

Scholarship Opportunities

Vanier students in their first year who are involved on campus or in their community and who are in financial need should consider applying for the ADITYA YOUTH TRUST FUND SCHOLARSHIP.

Graduating Vanier students who plan to study Commerce or Accounting next year at a Quebec university should consider applying for the CMA SCHOLARSHIP.

Graduating Vanier students with strong involvement in their school and community should consider the MILLER THOMSON SCHOLARSHIP.

Full-time Vanier students in a career program who are returning to Vanier next year and are passionate about their field of studies should consider applying to the UPPER YEAR GARFIELD WESTON AWARD.

Vanier students who have maintained at least an 80% average throughout CEGEP (must currently be in at least their 3rd semester) and are committed to their studies and college life should consider applying for the RFCM SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.
